Frederick Stewart Buchanan photograph collection 1890s-1996

The Frederick Stewart Buchanan photograph collection contains photographs on his personal life, ancestors, family and friends, including photographs of many of the L.D.S.(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) missionaries with whom Buchanan served in the British Mission during the early 1950s. A strong Scottish component is found in the collection including images from Buchanan's childhood in Ayrshire, Scottish royalty, scenery, and Scottish cultural events and gatherings in Utah. Folders 10-13 contain images related to Buchanan's career in, and study of education. Included are of photographs of the Eskdale Commune in the early 1970s, and superintendents and classroom scenes from Buchanan's book, Culture Clash & Accommodation: Public Schooling in Salt Lake City, 1890-1994.

Frederick S. Buchanan was born in Stevenson, Ayrshire, Scotland in 1931 and moved to Utah with his parents in 1949. Between 1951 and 1953 Buchanan served an L.D.S. mission in Great Britain and was later drafted into the United States Military. After his release from the army, Buchanan attended the University of Utah where he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees.
